The 1956 Melbourne Olympics had many memorable moments, the lighting of the touch by Ron Clarke, the individual performances of competitors such as Betty Cuthbert, Laszlo Papp and Larissa Latynina the infamous water polo match between Hungary and the USSR. However legendary goalkeeper, Lev Yashin competing at the games with the USSR football team is largely ignored.
At the 1956 Olympics in the first round the USSR faced the current world cup holders the Unified Team of Germany (in the 1956, 60 and 64 Summer and Winter Olympics the athletes from West and East Germany competed together), with the USSR winning 2-1. In the quarterfinals after drawing with Indonesia 0-0 in the first match, it took a replay for the USSR to progress winning 4-0. In the semifinal the USSR were against Bulgaria. After 90 minutes the match was scoreless. Bulgaria were the first to score in extra time however with two goals in the last six minutes of the match USSR had made it to the gold medal match. In the final USSR were narrow 1-0 victors against Yugoslavia. The 1956 Olympic football gold medal is one of the two the USSR won, the other was at Seoul 1988. The 1956 Olympics were also important for USSR football as Lev Yashin and three other members of the gold medal winning team, formed the nucleus of the USSR team that won the inaugural European Championship in 1960. Of the three senior mens football tournaments the USSR and Russia have won, two were won when Lev Yashin was playing.
Lev Yashin played his whole club career with Dynamo Moscow making 326 appearances from 1949-1971. Lev Yashin won the USSR football championship five times and the USSR Cup three times. At international level Lev Yashin won 74 international caps from 1954 - 1967. He played in three world cups 1958, 1962 and 1966. The USSR were quarter finalists in 1958 and 1962 and finished in fourth place in the 1966 world cup, this is the best performance at a world cup by either the USSR or Russia. Lev Yashin also went to the 1970 world cup as third choice goalkeeper and an assistant coach. Lev Yashin as well as playing at the 1960 European Championships, played at the 1964 version were the USSR lost the final to Spain.
Lev Yashin also won many individual honours during and after his career. He was selected in the 1958 world cup all-star team. Lev Yashin won the European footballer of the year award (Ballon d'Or) in 1963 still the only goalkeeper to have ever won the award. Also In 1963 he played in a Rest of the World XI against England. 1994 FIFA created the Lev Yashin Award for the best goalkeeper at the World Cup finals. FIFA named Lev Yashin as goalkeeper in the World Team of the 20th Century. Lev Yashin was one of the goalkeepers that began punching balls clear in difficult situations rather then attempt to catch them. He developed the quick throw of the ball to begin counter attacks, moving out of the 18 yard box to anticipate danger and commanding and organising the defender in front of him. Lev Yashin is widely regarded as the best goalkeeper of all time.
Lev Yashin is ability wise and with all his achievements one of the best sportsmen to ever come to Australia. Although those in Australia in 1956 could not of known the career Lev Yashin was to have, more than 50 years later we are in a position to look back. However for whatever reason the mainstream Australia sports media have ignored the story of how Lev Yashin and his USSR teammates won Olympic football gold and added to Melbourne's and Australia's rich tapestry of sporting history.
